Malibu Beaches: Still Plenty to Love

Malibu shoreline under a clear blue sky

Blue skies. Breaking waves. And yes, plenty of sand. After weeks of headlines about high surf and erosion, we grabbed our camera and headed to Zuma, Broad Beach and Malibu Road to see the coast for ourselves.

The storms have been real, and some spots need time to recover. But what we found was a good reminder of why we love it here. There's still plenty of beautiful shoreline to enjoy. It just depends on where you go.

What happened at Westward

Westward Beach near Point Dume in Malibu

If you've driven past Point Dume lately, you may have noticed Westward Beach looking a little different. Recent high surf pushed hard against this stretch of coast, eroding the sand and leading to emergency repairs.

For now, Westward Beach Road past the pay gate and the Point Dume Beach parking lot are closed while crews do their work, and there's renewed talk about restoring the beach long term. It's a good reminder that our coastline is always changing, and that Malibu takes good care of it.

While we miss this iconic stretch of sand, Malibu still has some beautiful beaches nearby to enjoy.

Zuma is open and looking great

Now for the good news. Just up the coast, Zuma is open and looking as beautiful as ever.

Zuma has always been one of Malibu's most beloved beaches, and for good reason. Generations of locals have grown up spending summers here because it's easy to access, welcoming to everyone, and a big part of what makes Malibu feel like Malibu.

Good to know: The Busch Drive/PCH underpass is closed for now, so use the main entrance and follow posted signs.

Broad Beach

At Broad Beach, we found a beautiful stretch of sand below the shoreline rocks. While the beach was narrower here than at Zuma, there were still lovely spots to enjoy the coastline.

And yes, the sinkhole you may have seen in the headlines was real. On September 8, significant erosion damaged Sea Level Drive near Lechuza Beach, prompting emergency closures and repairs. You can read more in the City's September 11 update.

But here's what's important to know: Broad Beach stretches approximately 1.1 miles along Malibu's coastline, and the damage was concentrated in a specific area. The section we photographed was separate from the affected location, and other portions of Broad Beach still offer sandy shoreline to enjoy.

As always, use designated public accessways, respect posted closures, and check the tides before visiting.

Malibu Road

Malibu Road has several beach access points, and each one opens onto its own stretch of coastline. At the very end of the road is a spot locals call Pink House Beach, named for the pastel pink building that overlooks the sand.

This is where we stopped, and the wide stretch of sand makes it a great spot for a beach day. Just minutes from Pepperdine, it offers a peaceful setting while keeping you close to the heart of Malibu.

And if you'd like to experience this iconic pink building for yourself, we currently have a unit available for lease where you can step right out onto the sand.

Still a beautiful day

Our favorite part of the afternoon was putting the headlines aside and spending time by the water.

Malibu's coastline is always changing, but its beauty isn't going anywhere. Choose your spot thoughtfully, respect the closures, and make a little time for the beach this week.
